Should We Use Headphones in VO Sessions?

They’re one of those voice over tools that has as many pros as cons. Some say they’re an absolute necessity, others say they’re nothing but a distraction, a crutch. Bob Souer has a definite opinion and wrote a great blog about it. Here’s an excerpt:

I first heard headphones called “cans” when I worked at a radio station in Chicago back the early 80s. Like a lot of people who have worked in radio for a while, I used to wear headphones all the time when I did voiceover work.     Based on years of observation and experience recording VO folks, I say no cans — it IS a distraction even for pros who worked in radio for years. Unless it absolutely necessary to read against a “scratch track” or to listen to a phone patch it is best to just let the words flow without the distraction.
