November 12, 2008 by: Tracy PattinI’m always being asked if being in radio helps you to get work as a voice actor. So, who did I go to for the best answer? Previous radio DJ turned voice over superstar, Randy Thomas. For more expert advice and insights, check out her new book, Voice For Hire.

Here’s what Randy said:
“That’s a question I have heard for the past fifteen years and my answer is always the same. YES!
For most of us who are from radio, we started our radio careers thinking that being on the air was the be all and end all. Then along came corporate buyouts, downsizing and outsourcing for talent, bringing in syndicated hosts and show tracking to cover nights and weekends. All of a sudden those of us that thought we would be happy on the air as a DJ for the rest of our days had a sobering awakening.
I say take control of your life and check out the recession-proof career of voice-over. You must become a student of the medium by studying with anyone and everyone that wants to teach you how to become and freelance voice-over artist. Your new mantra should be live your dream and use your voice! Study acting and improvisation with local comedy troops and theatre companies.”
