“In a World…”

The 3 Famous Words in a Movie Trailer

that Everyone Knows

The highly respected and greatly missed Don LaFontaine was a famous voiceover artist known for recording more than 5,000 movie trailers and hundreds of thousands of commercials, network promotions, and video game trailers. He became identified with the phrase “In a world…”, which has been used in movie trailers so frequently that it has become a catch phrase.

His legacy lives on by helping Voice talent at the The Don LaFontaine Voice-Over Lab.

The infamous 3 words Don recorded for so many movie trailers is taking on a life of its own.

The  movie In a World… has been accepted at the Sundance film festival this year based on life as a voice over artist.

Carol Solomon is a struggling vocal coach. Propelled by the hubris of her father, Sam Sotto, the reigning king of movie-trailer voice-over artists, Carol musters the courage to pursue her secret aspiration to be a voice-over star.

Some film critics are “up to here” with every suspenseful film especially “sci-fi like” movies having the trailer with “In a World…” type of narration.

While those of us watching the trailer will usually repeat the line to each other in that Ominous, Low, Gravitas Tone then chuckle because the line is always so expected to be in the trailer.

Even Jimmy Fallon gives a great comedic “thank you” to the words “In a World…”(2:15 into the you tube clip).

If you are a Voice talent reading this post I bet you have your own great version of the “In a World…” movie trailer voice.

Was hearing “In a World…” one of the reasons you were originally interested in doing Voiceover?
