What is Bill’s “Bobbywood” about?

Bill Ratner was watching I Love Lucy one night, when his father said, “That’s your uncle, Bobby the Bellboy.”
“I have an uncle on TV?!”
Watched by tens of millions of fans, Ratner’s uncle, comedian Bobby Jellison, staggered into Lucy & Ricky Ricardo’s Beverly Palms Hotel suite carrying luggage, laundry, and priceless dialogue. But after thirteen episodes Bobby disappeared. Decades later Best of Hollywood Fringe honoree Bill Ratner tracked down his uncle Bobby. Come along on the search for Bobby the Bellboy and experience his hopes, dreams, and hallucinations, in this unique world premier solo show starring Bill Ratner, one of Hollywood’s premier voiceover artists.

• HUFFINGTON POST: “More than just the premier voiceover talent in Hollywood today, Ratner writes with subtlety and texture worthy of a literary fiction master…”
• LA WEEKLY: “High-caliber storyteller”
• Eight-time winner: The Moth Story Slams
• Selected Best of Hollywood Fringe Festival 2012 for “Voices in my Head”

Original article – James Arnold Taylor and DLF Voice-over Lab

The Screen Actors Guild Foundation and the Don La Fontaine Voice-Over Lab Advisory Board are pleased to announce that voice-over artist James Arnold Taylor and his wife, Allison, have donated $5000 in support of the SAG Foundation’s Don La Fontaine Voice-Over Lab. As part of this donation, they will serve as “Straight Flush” sponsors at the SAG Foundation’s 3rd Annual Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Classic on Saturday, August 24, 2013 which benefits the DLF Voice-Over Lab. James has also offered to teach a class at the DLF Voice-Over Lab and has expressed an on-going commitment to the Lab’s mission dedicated to the development and success of professional voice-over artists.

“Since I was a kid I knew voice-acting was what I wanted to do and have pursued it knowing that it is an art that will rarely be credited. The Don La Fontaine Voice-Over Lab is the place that truly holds the proper regard for the craft and not only teaches students, but inspires all of us already in the ‘biz’ to share what we have learned and achieved. I invite others to give and support the Lab. It truly brings a voice to our craft,” said James Arnold Taylor, voice-over artist.

“In addition to being a real success story, James is a most welcome addition to the Don La Fontaine Voiceover Lab’s efforts. He understands our goals and his genuine desire to ‘pay it forward’ helps give others the chance to develop their talents and have the same opportunities,” says Paul Pape, SAG Foundation Board member and Don La Fontaine Voice Over Lab Advisory Board member.

As a voice-over artist, James has achieved success in virtually every area of the industry. His list of credits range from leading roles in major summer blockbuster films to starring roles in some of the hottest animation programs on television. He is a promo voice for the Fox broadcasting network and is heard regularly doing commercials for national ad campaigns on television and radio. From Obi-Wan Kenobe to Fred Flintstone, Leonardo the Ninja Turtle to Johnny Test, James has covered all shapes and sizes with his voice, which has linked him to all of the biggest franchises in film or television.

James’ current one man show, “Talking to Myself”, is an 80 minute tour de force which has been performed all over the world, including for our troops abroad. A sample of this show where he uses over 150 different voices can be seen by clicking here.

The SAG Foundation is grateful for the support of James and Allison Taylor and welcomes them to the growing family and community that makes up the Lab.

The 2013 Audiobook Gold Rush webinar

Calgary based voice-over actress Nicole Nielson has been diagnosed with an incurable condition called Parry Rombergs Syndrome. Only approximately 1 in one million people are affected by Parry Rombergs.

The condition causes extreme pain due to hemifacial atrophy leading to a host of other debilitating symptoms, including an associated condition known as Trigeminal Neurgalgia. There is not a single doctor in Canada that specializes in the Parry Rombergs. Since December 2011, Nicole has been trying to get by with only symptomatic treatment.

So the voice-over community is rallying together to support Nicole and her loved ones in raising money and awareness so that she may travel to a Mayo Clinic in the US to obtain adequate treatment of the disease itself.

In an effort to help many voice actors and coaches are coming together to raise funds. Julie Williams presents The 2013 Audiobook Gold Rush webinar with Patrick Fraley and Scott Brick including special guest Bob Deyan. 100% of the proceeds will go to Nicole’s cause. The webinar will take place on Tuesday May 21nd, 2013 at 6:00 PT (9:00 EST).

Julie Williams,Pat Fraley, and Scott Brick can all be found in the Voicebank.net Demo & Client Section.

Donations (and hugs) are also being accepted through Giveforward.com. There are many other ways to offer Nicole and her family assistance.

Get a VOICEOVER Industry Professional All to Yourself!

At voiceregistry Platinum members have had great success with participating in the website’s weekend Workouts. Which BTW are NOW during the week. Check for new scripts and last workout’s feedback on Monday’s noon pst.

AND we have added an additional opportunity so voiceregistry members can book time with an industry professional!

You may select from a list of various talent agents, casting directors,or audio pro.

One of the great things is you are able to schedule the time and do it all from the comfort of your own home or studio via skype!

Let’s face it with the price of Gas doing the session from your own home just might be as much as it would have cost to drive to a workshop and share your time with the pro with other actors…just sayin’;)

Wondering if the session will really get you on track with where you want to go with your Voice over career?

Here is an actual scenario with a One on One session that was scheduled -

The Actor’s Goal going into the session …Describe what you want to achieve in this session:“I’m no stranger to acting or producing, but I am a newcomer to voiceover. I moved to LA in ’95, too! I have an MA in Acting and have produced award-winning video games for over 15 years (Medal of Honor, Call of Duty), I’m now looking to return to acting and am revved up to get on with the next chapter. Classes I’ve taken warn of the risk of doing a demo too soon (wisely so, I’m certain), so I’m left to wonder as to proper next steps, should I write my own material, create and record my own characters? The art of finding the right agent or manager. I adore animation, have loved it all my life – so it’s the area I want to be. How do I get the wheels a-turnin’”?

Actor’s feedback after the session -“Today’s call was straight-forward, motivational and very informative as to the most productive career path and how to avoid the pitfalls out there. Thanks again for all the assistance.-Scott Langteau.

Still thinking about it??

Check out what Audio Guru, producer, author and voice talent Dan Friedman SOUND4VO had to say about the opportunity -

When was the last time you thought to yourself… “if a top voiceover industry pro could direct me and hear what I can do, I just know that they’ll be interested in hiring me”? Or perhaps you’ve thought, I really need direction and an outside pair of ears on this audition. Maybe your having trouble with your home studio and need some reasonably priced technical assistance… like… NOW! What if you’ve been thinking about working with a voiceover coach, but don’t know who to choose, or want to experience more than one person’s direction, perspective or methods?

Whether you are a top voiceover pro or just getting started, if you have been asking yourself these questions or have been thinking any of these things, the answers and the access you have been longing for, are now just a few clicks away. Voiceregistry is introducing a new One on One Voiceover Sessions program where you will have the opportunity to be seen and heard by working industry pros. I’m talking top agents and voice seekers! Some of the biggest names in the voiceover industry are here to help you take your voiceover career to the next level.

Don’t know if you’re ready to send your demo to a top agent… now you’ll have the opportunity to ask one. Maybe you are afraid your demo doesn’t sound good enough to submit to an agency. Now you’ll have the chance to find out before you send it. Are you a working pro who just got turned down on an audition… or six? Now you can quickly brush up on your skills and maybe even get coaching from the same agent who booked the job. Sure, it may be too late to land that job… or those jobs, but imagine how beneficial it could be to find out what, if anything, you could have done differently. That type of insight could truly pay off on the next audition.

Speaking of the next audition, how many times have you agonized over whether that audition you’ve just recorded is the best it can possibly be? With One on One Voiceover Sessions, you can have an audition directed live before you send it. You’ll get immediate feedback and gain confidence by knowing that your performance and your sound are competitive in today’s voiceover marketplace.

This program is designed to help you. You can get what you need, when you need it. Participate as often as you like. Work with one or more professionals who have a passion for our industry and who care about you.

For more than a decade, my roles as audio engineer, director, producer, author and voice talent have provided me with incredible opportunities. Since the very beginning of my career in voiceover (and probably a little longer), Voicebank has been working hard to bring together the best agents, talent and clients, raising the bar for the entire industry. I’m very excited to be taking part in this program. I look forward to offering you direction on auditions and demos, assisting you with your sound and studio and helping you succeed in your voiceover career.

Check out the voiceregistry One On One Voice over Sessions program and get to know the industry pros who are ready to help you, by clicking here.

Even when the producer is creating a non-union project I encourage to check what the union rate is and settle into a rate that is fair for the talent based on the union rate information.

Voicebank.net is building a new and improved interface for our producer clients to enjoy. One one of the many new great features we want to incorporate is a rate “cheat sheet” to help guide producers on the rates for various types of usage.

But till then guess what?

SAG/AFTRA have been busy fixing up their website, adding new rate sheet information and help make FINDING the information more accessible!

Do You Want Voice Over Work

OR

Get Paid What You are Worth?

Voicebank.net created the voiceregistry website to help actors “bridge” from not being represented to getting good solid representation. Once represented by an agency on VOICEBANK.NET your agent will upload your demo to the VOICEBANK.NET demo & client section and submit your auditions to top notch casting projects that are being cast through VOICEBANK.NET on a daily basis.

That being said one way we are able to get your voice right in front of the top talent agents that are on Voicebank.net is to offer the weekly WORKOUT on voiceregistry.

Each week an industry PRO provides copy and specs for the PLATINUM members on voiceregistry. The listener then listens to the reads and provides valuable feedback.

Most times the pro is a talent agent and that is the pro I want to focus on in this blog post.

A good solid talent agent can take your VO career from just getting by to earning what you are worth.

If you are a voice over talent I don’t have to tell you all that you have to invest in to keep your business going.

The equipment for recording and editing (that’s pretty penny right there) and well, you know the rest without me saying.

When Vice President &Talent Agent for DPN Mike Shallbetter asked if he could add a general note to all the participants of the Workout he was a guest listener for in April I had no idea what he wished to share.

Once I saw the advice I asked if I could share it on the blog, Mike’s response was,

” If posting my comments will help anyone, please do”.

What did one of the Workout Participates comment after reading the advice?

Bruce Abels – Kudos to Mike Shallbetter from DPN for his note to everyone who participated in last week’s WWO. What a class act. Thanks, Mike!

Before I do, I also want to add that awhile back Mike signed a new client that had been a Workout participant in a past Workout that Mike was the guest for.

His client who loves the Workouts emailed to tell us his experience.

Looking at both Mike’s advice and the client he signed Rick’s testimonial it was a no-brainier that voice talent out there could benefit from the exposure of getting in front of a great agent by doing the Workouts.

Once you’re with a solid Talent Agent that is looking out for you, instead of working for peanuts you can earn what you are worth.

Now let’s let Mike’s advice and Rick’s experience tell it best….

Mike wrote -

“Folks.
Thank you for taking the time to send in your reads for review. You will notice that I am a tough critic. I am very passionate about the craft of using ones voice and it is not for the faint of heart. The business is more competitive and saturated than EVER before. I would like to say that the most talented or nicest or committed VO actors book the work. Not so. Not even close. It’s a combination of having great, far reaching; first call representation….getting as many auditions and chances to swing the bat as possible and KNOWING YOUR STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES. Then some luck.

People…. Be realistic.

Take a REALLY close listen to yourself and then find a truly honest friend to listen with you. If you have a speech issue, mouth noise, lisp or anything like that….STOP…and if you truly want to do voice over…get that fixed. Otherwise frustration will consume you.

STUDY YOUR CRAFT. Watch TV and listen to the radio. Watch promos. As painful as it is sometimes….if you don’t know what VO style is being used, you are out of the game. Find YOUR voice. Listen to qualities in others and learn from them but find YOUR voice. If you try and copy someone exactly….it does not serve you. THEY will be the one being hired. Not you.

If you are lucky enough to have someone hire you for work and it is NON UNION. KNOW THIS….they will pay you a couple hundred bucks. Maybe even a couple thousand. BUT you will see or hear that spot running until the end of time and NEVER get another cent. That is a fact and that is a total bummer when you realize how much potential money could have been made.

I wish you all the best of luck.”

Mike Shallbetter

Now here is the inspiring and FUN part –

Rick wrote -

Don’t know if you’re aware, but Weekend Workout was touting that Mike Shallbetter was coming back. And I think it was said that last time he got a good client. If so, I think that client was me. Still with him and DPN. I Can’t say enough good things about Mike. Among other things he’s hooked me up with NFL Films in NY, which I’ve done a number of features and a five series show on Travel Channel, called ‘NFL Road Tested’. It’s been a very rewarding relationship. Thought I’d let you know, Rick

Read for Talent Agent Ilko Drozdoski – TGMD, Los Angeles

Because Ilko is a wonderfully diverse agent we were able to request that one of the scripts included in this upcoming workout be for our Spanish speaking Platinum Members along with some other great script selections.

Next voice-over Workout will begin Monday April 29th at 12 noon pst.

**You MUST Be a PLATINUM Member to Participate in the Workout**

Ilko Drozdoski (The “D” in TGMD)

Ilko Drozdoski didn’t aim for a show business career but gravitated toward it; working as a jack-of-all trades on music videos, setting up rigging, painting sets, processing invoices, doing whatever job came his way. Meanwhile, Ilko was absorbing the complex components of the entertainment industry. Several years working in Hollywood production offices taught him to appreciate the politics and strategies demanded by the business. Arriving at Tisherman Agency in 1998, Ilko started as an assistant, but his drive and connection to cultural trends quickly became an asset to the company as he helped develop and refine the Latin department at Tisherman.

Ilko’s passionate interest in the film business and his wide experience have sharpened his communication skills and helped him respond to a market increasingly concerned with prototypes, rather than age ranges or a vocal styles. Ilko’s fascination with trends in digital recording, the internet, ISDN technology and other advances have condensed the casting process from a week to day, allowing TGMD to remain flexible in a fast-paced marketplace.

WHY PARTICIPATE IN THE VOICE OVER WORKOUTS?

Further develop your voice over auditioning technique through practice.
Receive constructive critiques of your practice audition
Learn from others by listening to their takes and reading any suggestions given by the Guest Director
Increase your exposure to Talent Agents and Casting Directors

Simple Ways to Do a Good Recording

Between getting calls and emails about starting a career in Voiceover one of the main questions asked time and time again is “What do I need to record my voice and do I need a studio”?

Even talent that already work in Voice-over have questions about how they can improve on what they have or are doing.

On our other website voiceregistry some of the Weekend Workout participants put in a request that a Workout be dedicated to the technical aspect of the reads being submitted.

Two really great voice actors Matt Cowlrick & Patrick Sweeney who have been enjoying the benefit of participating in the voiceregistry Weekend workouts had this to say -

“There is huge variety in the quality of the recording spaces that we hear on Weekend Workout, so we thought it would be cool to have someone like George Whittam or Dan Lenard (or both) appear as the guest(s) for one weekend. Everyone could record the same script, as per usual and Voicebank could communicate to participants that there is no performance feedback this specific week. The comments from the guest will be purely technical and a basic evaluation of the recording space.”

And Matt added -

“My room is pretty good (I’ve hired George Whittam already), but I’m sure myself and a lot of people who have a strong setup would still get a lot of value out of the constructive feedback.”

Whether we do a “Tech” Workout on voiceregistry or not ( that decision isn’t up to me) I decided to create this post to make life easier for both you, me, and the many VO friends that can be helped by pointing those with the burning “how to” questions in their direction.

Dan Lenard “In the East” and George Whittam “In the West” do weekly shows on their website East West Audio Body Shop. The shows are chocked full of a wealth of information on equipment, helpful advice and interviews.

I have met them both and respect what they are bringing to the voice-over community.

Like Matt mentioned in his email to us, along with the website and their show they also offer tech support.

They don’t even need to be local to you to be able to help!

Please see their website for details – East West Audio Body Shop

Still Wondering about the Home Studio Question??

To find out what the voice of Spongebob Squarepants Tom Kenny thinks about the “Is a Home Studio a “Must Have” to do Voiceover?” debate check out his appearance on EWABS

Choosing a Talent Agency For Voice-over

Go Big or Go Boutique?

Here at Voicebank.net we have a wonderful list of talent agencies for producers and casting directors to select from when creating their voiceover project or when searching in the Demo & Client section.

Some are Big and some Boutique - Quite frankly as long as the agent does their job to the best of their ability both are great as far as I am concerned.

Some actors have said to me, “they don’t want to be a small fish in a big pond” so they aren’t sure if they would want to sign with a bigger agency

I have heard owners of Boutique agencies say they prefer to represent exclusive talent only and keep the amount of actors that they represent to a minimum. This way they can give each actor the personal attention they deserve.

Where as the big agencies will usually have an agent (or agents) for each genre if you will.

For example, an agent for promos, and then another for commercial, etc.

That also helps keep the actor on the agents radar and workload manageable.

The voiceover industry has become such a fast paced world!

With today’s technology an agent has to look over a spec for an audition and look over the contractual information to be sure they are protecting their client. Get the information to the actors that match the spec correctly and get the read back from the actor and upload before the project deadline that usually is a VERY tight turnaround.

If you are looking for an agent to represent you -

You also want to consider if you want the agency to be exclusive to voiceover or if you are satisfied as long as they have a voiceover dept.

My role here at Voicebank.net is to help those who cast voiceover projects, talent agents, and actors.

So I hear from all sides the different thought process involved.

I have experienced with producers and casting directors that the size of the agency is not important but the agency’s work ethic IS.

There is nothing worse than when a producer invites an agency to submit auditions and the agency not only doesn’t submit but doesn’t communicate why.

A simple “Thanks for the invite but we don’t have talent that matches the spec at this time”goes a long way.

So how do we sum all this up?

When it comes to producers and casting directors when they have a good experience with a talent agency that definitely creates a positive relationship which equals more auditions and bookings for the agency and it’s roster of actors in the future.

For Actors looking for an agent -

It isn’t about just getting an agent. if you get an agent but that agent isn’t following through for you what good is that. BUT when you have an agent that is on their game what they do for you behind the scenes is priceless.

Which type of talent agency would you want to work with and why?

Voicebank.net/voiceregistry has been proud and happy sponsors of faffcon since it first began.

Now there is a new event for all who have experienced or yet to experience faffcon.

What event is this you ask? – Faff Camp.

Personally I have always come away from faffcon learning something new or getting a far better understanding on something I needed and wanted to understand every single time.

I’m sure Faff Camp is set out to do the same thing for all who attend.

Amy Snively and her wonderful band of hardworking faffer’s work ethic and reason for doing what they do is very much the same as what fuels us at Voicebank.net, to be hard working and helpful to all of our wonderful clients & friends!

This Faff Camp’s Statement of Belief -

We believe in making it without faking it.

We believe that success is not a zero sum game.

We believe that every time we help a colleague, we help our industry.

And that helping our industry helps us all.

We believe that connecting in person makes a difference.

We believe that sharing what we can leads to getting what we need.

We know that what we’re doing matters

Get a VOICEOVER Industry Professional All to Yourself!

At voiceregistry Platinum members have had great success with participating in the website’s weekend Workouts. Which BTW are NOW during the week. Check for new scripts and last workout’s feedback on Monday’s noon pst.

This year we are adding an additional opportunity so voiceregistry members can book time with an industry professional.

You may select from a list of various talent agents, casting directors,or audio pro.

One of the great things is you are able to schedule the time and do it all from the comfort of your own home or studio!

Check out what Audio Guru and Voice talent Dan Friedman SOUND4VO had to say about the opportunity -
