The current SAG and AFTRA negotiations for their expiring contracts is the big topic of conversation in the voice over industry. Over the past 12 months, I’ve had discussions with everyone from Producers and Creative Directors at Ad Agencies to Talent Agents to Actors – even a few SAG & AFTRA officials from both coasts have chimed in.

Yes, the base point that people bring up is money:
- For the Actor, how do i protect what I have now as well as grow it in the future?
- For the Agent, how do I effectively represent my client base without increasing the commission I charge, while dealing with increasing business costs?
- For the Producer, how do I deliver the best product to my client, within budget, that allows me to make a profit and grow my business?

Important questions to answer, but these negotiations aren’t just about dollars and cents. There are SO many issues. Below are some of the re-occurring themes that have been discussed with me:

- Emerging markets and how to quantify and monetize them.
- The difference in how companies do business in different media areas (Commercial, Film, TV, Radio, etc…).
- The needs of Actors, Agents and Producers in different regions of the country.
- How technology impacts the industry.
- The most effective way to reach the consumer.

I will avoid printing and summarizing opinions from “off the record” conversations that I’ve had but in the next couple of weeks, I will be posting articles and conversations that I think are important for people on different sides of the industry to be aware of. Don’t fool yourselves: these negotiations will affect ALL performers, whether Union, Non-Union or Financial Core and anyone who is a part of our business needs to be aware and informed about what’s going on.

This is your business. Knowledge and informed opinions are the only way to make progressive decisions.

Read, Listen, Think, Talk.

We have yet to have an opportunity to review the specifics of their deal but we remain optimistic that the Writers Guild will soon resume negotiations with the studios so people can return to work. AFTRA’s priority is to negotiate strong wages, residuals, benefits, and working conditions for talent in all TV day parts and formats and we intend to resume our own negotiations with the networks and major producers for the Network Code on or before February 19, said AFTRA President Roberta Reardon.

The following article appeared on Broadcasting & Cable’s website. Important issues are being decided in the upcoming year:

Screen Actors Guild Board of Directors Calls for Vote to Dissolve Phase I Agreement with American Federation of Radio and Television Artists By John Eggerton — Broadcasting & Cable, 1/14/2008 4:11:00 PM

The Screen Actors Guild board of directors agreed to call for a vote on whether to negotiate separately from the American Federation of Radio and Television Artists on a new contract with the studios.

SAG leadership argued that as currently constituted, the so-called Phase I agreement under which the two unions have bargained for separate but identical contracts since 1981 is “as out-of-date as black-and-white television,” as SAG president Alan Rosenberg put it in announcing the call for a referendum of the rank and file.

Rosenberg said AFTRA had been “unwilling” to correct “the shortcomings in the current agreement. AFTRA had hoped to continue to bargain in tandem, saying that it was in the best interests of both of their constituencies.

But following Rosenberg’s comments, AFTRA fired off a response Sunday saying, “SAG’s repeated attempts to undermine AFTRA and create a schism between our unions are divisive, destructive and clearly not in the best interest of performers in either union.” Ascribing the vote to a “radical Hollywood faction” of SAG, AFTRA said it would not be made the scapegoat for SAG’s political divide. “We condemn actions by SAG to terminate a joint bargaining agreement that has been working to our members’ mutual benefit for 27 years,” AFTRA added.
