Another Deal or No Deal
May 14, 2008 by: Tracy PattinI wrote a blog recently called, Deal or No Deal about a voice over situation where I ended up doing more work for the same pay (at first). I got so many comments, I’ve decided to keep the conversation going. (or the blogversation?) Here’s another voice over situation where I had to decide Deal or No Deal…
I got a call from a producer at a cable network. They wanted me to do a voice over project and wanted to hire me on the spot, no auditioning. When we talked numbers, they asked me my rate. I told them my per tag rate and they immediately said I was too expensive. I used my negotiating technique, “since you’re a first time client, I’m willing to work within your budget.” It was (once again, see the first Deal or No Deal blog) similar to my other tag experience. They said they only had $1,000 for a series of tags. I was willing to go for it.
The job turned out taking one hour, so it was worth it. I’m so glad I was willing to negotiate because I almost lost the job. They’ve called me since and have recommended me to other producers.
So, it’s one of those subjective, case by case things. We just have to have a plan and not get blind-sided by these situations.
